Reasons for Setting Kareem Free

A free civilization erodes when its individuals become oblivious as to why it is that particular good rules are good. Why should Abdel Kareem be allowed to speak? Why is freedom of speech important? We launch an invitation to our visitors and associates to contribute to a pro-liberty campaign by giving an answer to this question. For many of us, a list of reasons may be important in a more fundamental way than a list of signatures.

To Kareem's assistance and for a civilization of liberty, we invite you to formulate on CADI's blog (in English, or Romanian) arguments in favor of freedom of speech and continue the list of reasons to setting Kareem free.

How Slovenian Students See the World They Live in

Matjaz Steinbacher from the Free Society Institute in Slovenia reports on the general opinion prevailing among students in his country. It shows, if necessary, that our Institutes have still much work to do to explain the basic working of a free society and its moral underpinning…

Matjaz Steinbaker, January 2007:
People and politicians living in the continental Europe have always found arguments for solving economic and people’s problems in the literature that is closer to Karl Marx than to Adam Smith.

Our friend, Attila Yayla, paying a high price for his fight for freedom of expression in Turkey

Professor Attila Yayla is ally and good friend to many in the freedom network, and the seminars and reports of the Association for Liberal Thinking have done much to contribute to the liberalization of Turkey in economic and political fields. In the essay below (published on the Atlas Economic Research Foundation website) he details his “controversial” remarks that have sparked a very heated (and exhausting) debate. Cato’s Tom Palmer writes eloquently of Professor Yayla on the Cato-at-Liberty blog and notes: "Advocates of freedom the world over should support Dr. Atilla Yayla, a principled voice for freedom of speech, for toleration, and for the civilized values of limited government, protection of property, and freedom of contract, association, and trade.

Statement of Concern for Freedom in Russia

From June 29 – July 1, 2006, the F.A. v. Hayek Institute has hosted in Vienna the 3rd Meeting of the European Resource Bank. The conference has gathered some 250 representatives from various institutes, think tanks and professional organizations, who had hence the opportunity to discuss some current policy issues (see the link to the programme in the left column) as well as some strategies for pushing forward our ideas such as coalition building. We will have time to come back on the various lessons to be drawn from those debates, but we should waste no time in implementing one of the decision we took in Vienna: to bring support to our friends in Russia who each day meet greater difficulty in carrying out their work as independent think tanks. You will find below in a pdf format the "Statement of Concern for Freedom in Russia" which was discussed in Vienna and signed by 45 representatives of almost as many institutes.

18 September 2006: News from Budapest

Dear Friends,
I don’t know how much you are hearing about Hungary in the news, but at the moment, the National Television is on fire, as are several cars, and protestors have taken a tank. Sebestyén is there as events unfold, while I am safely at my desk! It’s impossible to know at the moment where things will stand by morning, but we wanted to share with some background and insights about these events.
All best, Katie
